What the anniversary measures
Pokémon is thirty years old. Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green launched in Japan for Game Boy on 27 February 1996, making 27 February 2026 the thirtieth anniversary. That date has already passed. The official anniversary website identifies the original release as the starting point. Information checked for this feature: 30 October 2026.
Your own introduction may have come through a television episode, a handheld game or a collection of cards. Those memories belong to the audience's history, but they do not all mark the beginning of the franchise. Separating personal memories from release dates makes the anniversary easier to understand, especially when people from different countries compare their first encounters.
Games, cards and animation have separate starting points
The Pokémon Company's historical timeline establishes the sequence. These milestones did not happen simultaneously:
- February 1996: Red and Green launch in Japan.
- 20 October 1996: the Japanese trading card game begins, with the exact date recorded in the official Pokémon Card Game chronicle.
- April 1997: the television anime starts on TV Tokyo in Japan.
- September 1998: Red and Blue and the television animation launch in the United States.
- 2026: the franchise and, separately, the Japanese TCG reach thirty.
This explains an easy mistake: the anime is not thirty in 2026. Its Japanese debut reaches that milestone in 2027. Releases in other countries also have their own dates. A franchise anniversary is therefore a useful umbrella, but it should not replace the individual histories of every format or regional edition.
The sequence also offers a way to organise a conversation. Someone remembering a television story and someone discussing a card match may both say “Pokémon” while describing different experiences. Ask which format they mean before comparing details. It makes room for newcomers without expecting everyone to share the same knowledge.
Pikachu as a familiar meeting point
Pikachu is among the series' most recognisable characters. The company's official account of its video games notes that Pikachu keeps one name worldwide. It describes collecting, raising, battling and trading as recurring foundations, alongside different approaches such as photography in New Pokémon Snap and investigation in Detective Pikachu.
That provides a useful lens for interpreting Pikachu's wider cultural role. A familiar character can start a conversation between people whose interests barely overlap. Recognising the name does not require knowing tournament rules or remembering every creature. For one person Pikachu may be the starting point; for another, simply one favourite among many.
Try asking people from different generations which character or scene they remember first. Compare those answers rather than testing who knows the most. A remembered drawing, a sound and a game strategy offer different kinds of knowledge. This is a more revealing way to discuss Pokémon's place in popular culture than treating every fan as the same kind of collector.
Confirmed celebrations, with dates and status
27 February: the anniversary campaign began. The Japanese announcement published that day introduced the anniversary website, monthly themes and a special video. The first theme concerned beginnings. These are launched activities, rather than evidence that the birthday is still approaching.
27 February: Pokémon Presents. The official presentation recap records the day's updates. Its Pokémon TCG Pocket login rewards ran from 27 February at 14:00 UTC until 27 June at 05:59 UTC. That window has ended. Finding the announcement today does not mean those rewards remain claimable.
16 September: 30th Celebration launched. The official Pokémon press release confirms the TCG expansion's release, including 30 Pikachu rare variants and 30 returning classic cards. It also gives a TCG Live anniversary Battle Pass unlock deadline of 5 November 2026 at 09:00 PST, still ahead at this update. Individual product release dates can vary by region.
When checking further activities, look for the country, application and closing date. Pokémon TCG Pocket and Pokémon TCG Live are different names, so do not transfer an offer from one to the other. Likewise, an expansion's launch does not establish whether a particular box is available at a particular retailer. Read the linked announcement before planning participation.
Explore at your own pace
A useful anniversary activity is to follow one character across several media. Compare a card illustration, a scene from animation and a game description. Write down what you actually notice before adding what you remember. This creates a small exercise in looking closely: how is the character presented, what does the format emphasise, and what remains familiar?
If you are returning after a long break, choose one area first. Read the rules of the specific game you intend to play, or identify the particular animated series you want to watch. With cards, distinguish enjoying the artwork from building a playable deck. Those are different aims and call for different information. There is no need to catch up with everything to take part.
Four anniversary questions
When did Pokémon turn thirty?
On 27 February 2026, thirty years after Red and Green debuted in Japan. By October, the anniversary year is already well under way.
Does the anime turn thirty in 2026 too?
Its Japanese television debut was in 1997. Its own thirtieth anniversary falls in 2027.
Did the cards begin alongside the games?
They began in the same year, but later: Japan's TCG started in October. It has a separate place on the timeline.
Where should I check anniversary activities?
Use the linked anniversary website and official announcements. Check regional conditions and end dates before assuming that an older activity remains open.
